Some news highlights from around the world this week including the takedown of a major card fraud and cybercrime underworld figure, a breach at a fast food chain in the Southern US, and a new POS skimmer has emerged just in time for the holidays:

 

Bloomberg Businessweek – Ukrainian Head of Cybercrime Marketplace Gets 18 Years in Prison A Ukrainian cybercriminal was sentenced to 18 years in prison by a U.S. judge for his role in co-founding the CarderPlanet website, where thieves sold stolen credit-card data and other financial information. Roman Vega, 49, has been in custody since his arrest in 2003 in Cyprus. CarderPlanet was “one of the most notorious websites for computer hacking, money laundering and credit card fraud,” the Justice Department said in court papers.

Fox Carolina – Deputies: Credit card info at Upstate, NC fast food restaurants stolen  Multiple locations of the Bojangles fast food restaurant chain have been breached by hackers that managed to steal credit card data from store systems. Police continue to investigate as at least 35 victims have now come forward.

Krebs on Security – Simple But Effective Point-of-Sale Skimmer Just in time for the holiday shopping season, a new type of POS skimming device has been spotted by security reporter Brian Krebs. The new device is targeted for Verifone terminals and fits as an overlay to the terminal keypad.
