Weekly News Roundup: September 13, 2013

Some news highlights from around the world this week including a large counterfeit card bust in Sydney, coverage of Mako’s new U.S. office, and a breach at a chain restaurant in Texas:

Herald Sun (Australia) – Hundreds of Fake Credit Cards and Identities Seized From a Western Sydney Home Set Up As a Factory of Fraud Police in Sydney broke up a large and sophisticated credit card counterfeiting ring operating in the western suburbs. In searches the authorities discovered hundreds of high-quality fake cards, along with other falsified identity documents.

The New Zealand Herald – Kiwi Tech Firm Gears Up to Attack US Market News of Mako’s new office in San Francisco was covered in the New Zealand Herald online, one of the country’s top news outlets and companion to its largest newspaper. The article includes quotes from both Simon Gamble and Bill Farmer, with an accompanying photo.

KDFW-TV – Wise County Credit Cards Compromised A small taco restaurant outside of Dallas, Texas, has been identified in news reports as the source of a card data breach affecting more than 700 people. Police say there’s no evidence of skimming or insider theft by store employees. Investigators suspect a larger card fraud ring is behind the breach, likely hacking the card data to later sell it online. That helps explain the charges that have been appearing on statements from all over the U.S. and Jamaica.
