Mako Networks Prepares for Surge in Petroleum Zone Router Replacements as Outdoor EMV POS Deadline Nears

Mako is certified by both Verifone and Gilbarco to provide managed network appliances and services needed for petroleum outdoor EMV POS deployment, including zone router replacement.

CHICAGO, IL, September 24, 2019 – In response to card brand requirements for modernizing network security prior to EMV POS deployment, leading petroleum POS providers Verifone and Gilbarco have each created a certified Managed Network Service Provider (MNSP) program. EMV is the global technical standard for smart payment cards (chip cards). As a certified MNSP for both Verifone and Gilbarco, Mako Networks is ready to play its part for new and existing customers throughout the convenience and fuel retail industry.

Mako Networks provides all-in-one network appliances that combine a managed firewall and zone router to deliver secure remote access for POS provider support and software updates, eliminating the need for a separate zone router (such as the EZR for Verifone Commander and the SZR for Gilbarco Passport) and simplifying retail location networks. Deploying a Mako appliance also eliminates the MicroNode device for Gilbarco Passport users, resulting in faster payment transactions.

“With the original February 2019 EMV POS implementation deadline already in the past and the extended October 2020 deadline coming fast, now is the time to schedule your zone router replacements with Mako,” said Simon Gamble, President of Mako Networks. “We have increased staff and inventory to meet the expected demand.”

Upgrading to Mako brings many advantages beyond replacing a zone router. The entire Mako System—including Mako appliances, the Mako Central Management System (CMS), and onboard software—is PCI DSS certified from end‐to‐end, providing peace of mind and security for retailers. Mako can even secure wireless networks for tablet‐based POS systems.

With a sealed, tamper-evident unit, no moving parts, and high heat tolerance, Mako 6600 edge appliances are suited to the tough network environment of convenience and fuel retail locations. Features include 24/7 access to the Mako CMS for cloud-based configuration, reporting, and diagnostics; single- or dual-SIM cellular; fast failover for high availability; four physical network segments, plus VLAN support; up to four Wi-Fi networks; a stateful inspection firewall; Mako VPN Cloud SD-WAN tunneling; encrypted IPSec VPN tunneling; content filtering; zero-touch deployment; and WAN connectivity via LTE, Ethernet, fiber, or xDSL at up to 1Gbit transfer speeds.

Mako VPN concentrators, such as the Mako 7600 or Mako 8600, deliver even more features in a 1U form factor and with additional processing power that allows them to terminate thousands of VPN tunnels. Deploying multiple Mako VPN concentrators at multiple data centers provides load distribution as well as circuit, hardware, and geographic redundancy. These appliances can also be virtualized using AWS or Google Cloud
