Mako Networks Launches New 8600 High-Performance VPN Concentrator

The Mako 8600 is Mako’s most advanced VPN concentrator to date, featuring greater port density and faster VPN throughput than its predecessors.

ELGIN, IL, May 15, 2019 – Mako VPN concentrators protect corporate networks and connect data centers for some of the largest companies in the world. The new Mako 8600 expands Mako’s successful 8000-series concentrator line by providing enhanced CPU capability and delivering notably higher VPN throughput versus previous models. The enhanced specification of the 8600 allows it to support a higher number of concurrent sessions and improves performance across all processor-intensive functionalities. In addition to the performance gains, 8600 concentrators also have increased port density, providing seven 1Gbps LAN interfaces in a 1U rack space.

With VPN throughput roughly four times faster than the outgoing 8875, Mako’s new 8600 is the next step in Mako’s faster and more powerful product lineup for 2019. The 8600 data-center level concentrator compliments the significantly upgraded Mako 6600 edge appliances and 7600 central office high speed VPN gateways.

The 8600 is designed to terminate thousands of VPN connections simultaneously, offering a highly cost-effective platform with the out-of-the box performance to handle growth, usage spikes and enterprise-wide security and network routing with ease. Each 8600 is fully SD-WAN capable and is rated to terminate up to 10,000 simultaneous Mako VPN Cloud tunnels. Like all Mako appliances, the 8600 takes advantage of the functionality, reporting capability and ease-of-use of the Mako Central Management System (CMS).

Mako’s complete ecosystem — including the Mako 8600 VPN concentrator, the CMS, and all onboard software — is PCI DSS certified from end‐to‐end, providing industry-leading security and dramatically simplifying compliance for enterprise customers with PCI obligations.

The Mako 8600 is a full-blown SD-WAN powerhouse, using Mako’s advanced VPN Cloud technology to provide a more flexible and scalable alternative to IPSec, while also offering multi-layer, multi-location redundancy. In order to allow secure connections to legacy equipment, the 8600 still supports IPSec, and both tunneling approaches are secured using industrial-strength Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption. VPN Cloud is NAT friendly and does not require static or public IP addresses at remote sites, even when providing seamless failover between devices or data centers.

As part of the VPN Cloud ecosystem, when Mako 8600 appliances are configured for High Availability (HA) failover, the Mako system provides real-time, zero-downtime failover between units in the event of a hardware, circuit or power failure. Mako VPN Clouds can also consist of Mako 8600 appliances at multiple data centers, providing load distribution as well as circuit, hardware, and geographic redundancy. VPN Cloud’s critical data technology allows time sensitive and business critical communications to operate seamlessly across devices or even multiple data centers, routing traffic as needed to minimize latency, jitter, and packet loss. As expected in this level of appliance, all Mako 8600s feature dual power supplies.

The Mako CMS allows zero-touch deployment of all appliances, including the 8600, by automatically passing site-specific configuration information to the appliance from the Mako CMS via the cloud. Once activated, every 8600 appliance has 24/7 access to the Mako CMS, allowing for remote management and reporting. The CMS also offers 8600 users high definition diagnostic capabilities, both on-device and on-network, and significantly reduces diagnostic costs across customer estates. With a built-in firewall featuring port scanning protection and worm detection, an integrated router with BGP support, and the power of the CMS, the 8600 easily handles complex data center configurations and templated enterprise-wide security and provides customers plenty of options when building, maintaining and securing their wide area networks.

For environments where on-site hardware is impractical to deploy, the 8000-series platform also offers virtualization on Google Cloud or Amazon Web Services.
