Pledging Our Support for Cyber Security Awareness Week

By Bill Farmer

Every day last year the New Zealand economy lost more than $1.7 million to cybercrime.

It’s a shocking statistic, but testament to the scale and severity of cybercrime affecting New Zealand citizens and businesses.

Small businesses are at particular risk from cyber criminals and fraudsters. As larger, more skilled organizations lock down their computer systems and networks, fraudsters and criminals are shifting their focus to easier targets: small businesses that have less knowledge, resources and funding available to adequately protect themselves. That’s why we think Netsafe’s Cyber Security Awareness Week (CSAW) is a great initiative that’s come not a moment too soon.

We’re urging everyone to visit the CSAW website for practical advice you can use to lock down your business right now. This year, CSAW is focusing on four central security themes:

  • Secure your wireless
  • Back up your files
  • Use strong passwords
  • Update everything.

New Zealand lost $625 million to cybercrime last year – that’s far too much. By promoting free advice and information to consumers and small businesses as part of the government’s Cyber Security Strategy, we wish Netsafe the best of luck in the success of this programme, and pledge our support for this essential initiative.
